Milne Bay

Masurina Lodge * Napatana lodge

Milne Bay lies at the most south-eastern tip of PNG. As a maritime Province with many spectacular reef, island structures and cultures, most of her people are seafarers who depend largely on a livelihood from the sea. Ceremonial gift exchanges like the Kula, and trade between the islands are among the richest cultural heritages in the Pacific

Milne Bay province has around 435 islands and its main city is Alotau, which means "Bay" in the Suau language, and is situated between the Solomon Sea and the Coral Sea. Milne Bay offers fantastic diving all year round. The first European to enter Milne Bay was Captain John Moresby, when he sailed into China Strait, which he named thinking he had discovered a shortcut from Australia to China. There are about 48 local languages and the area now exports include palm oil, forest products, cocoa, coffee, minerals, fish and other marine products.

Ecotourism is being developed in the villages focusing on the rainforest, trekking, birdwatching, bat caving, fishing, diving, snorkling, war sites, surfing and cultural sites of interest. The province has the richest marine biodiversity in the world, which is why so many divers come to Milne Bay. There are orchids, marsupials, birds of paradise, mountains, islands, rainforest, waterfalls, hot springs and skull caves as well as a fascinating local history based on missionaries, mercenaries and misfit fortune seekers.
